Welcome to Swansea University Athletic Union

AU President's Welcome

Simon's Hello

Hi, my name is Siwan Lillicrap and I’m your AU President for the year 2009-10.

I am here for you, if you have any problems or questions then don’t hesitate to get in contact. With over 50 clubs in the AU there really is something for every one, if there is something you have always wanted to try and we offer it then what are you waiting for….get involved!

You can find me in the AU office which is on level two of Union House near the Level2 shop behind the porters office. If you need to get in contact with me, you can e-mail me at
aupresident@swan.ac.uk or call me 01792 295704.

This past few years have been really exciting for Swansea, we have staged some huge sporting events such as Varsity, The Welsh Cup and British University events, as well as on a social level. Some of our “Big Wednesdays” at Play Nightclub have included;
Scott Mills, Dirty Sanchez, Sash!, The Inbetweeners, Dave Pearce, Judge Jules, GLC and Ultrabeat. We topped off the year in style with our annual AU Ball at the Liberty Stadium. Next year is set to look just as exciting!

With around 50 clubs, having something for everyone, it doesn’t matter if you wish to compete at a high level or simply want to get fit and have fun. If there is a sport that we offer that you have always wanted to try but have never been able to, go for it – your time at university is very likely to be the only time you’ll ever have access to such a wide variety of sports.

Through the Athletic Union, you have the chance to meet lots of new people – all of our clubs are very welcoming and friendly. While maintaining a good balance between academic responsibility and your personal life, involvement in the Athletic Union is an excellent way to engage in the university experience!

My Job

My job as AU President will be to oversee all the clubs and sporting events within the university.

I ensure that everything runs smoothly and effectively, giving students a more hassle free opportunity to get involved in sport. Many of our clubs are entered into the British Universities Colleges Sport(BUCS) Championships; it is my responsibility to organise fixtures, deal with any match day problems and generally assist the teams.

There are various ways in which you can find out about sport in Swansea. The first chance you will probably get will be at Freshers’ Fayre, where you can join the AU and any club(s) you wish. Our website is also a good way to find out what’s going on, so come on here regulary to get updated. Any other questions, come up and see me in the AU office.

AU Sportswear

This year sees the continuation of our ever popular University sports kit, made and supplied by Kukri. The kit is ideal for training, fixtures and even going to lectures in!

The range includes smocks, polo shirts and hoodies - everything will be on display at Freshers’ Fayre and can be ordered in the AU office or bought from the Level2 shop. You can also purchase items online with our online shop and get them delivered straight to your door! BUT, we will have limited stock available, and will be working on a first come, first served basis, so get your order in fast to avoid disappointment!

Varsity

The annual Varsity games between Swansea University and Cardiff University are a major event in the university sporting calendar, and this year will be no exception – it’s going to be huge!

This year, Varsity is returning to Swansea having been played away at Cardiff Arms Park for the past three years. The event will be held the the fantastic Liberty Stadium, so this is your chance to get covered in green and white face paints and clothes and support your university Varsity teams.

The tournament takes place over one day and sees the 1st teams from Swansea and Cardiff’s wide range of sports competing against each other during the day, culminating in a rugby match, with the winners receiving the Victory Shield. The day’s celebrations continue long into the night after the final whistle, with the massive Varsity After Party, held in Play Nightclub in Swansea.

Swansea has had much success in the Varsity matches over the years it has been running, but unfortuntely have lost for two consecutive years. This year the teams will be working hard to reclaim the Shield, but they need everybody’s support – so come along and be part of it!

The coming year looks set to be pretty awesome – have an excellent time in Swansea, get involved, and I hope to see you all soon.

Welcome from the Athletic Union's General Manager

Hi, my name is Richard Lancaster and I am the General Manager here at Swansea University Athletic Union. As General Manager I am responsible for the past, the present and the future of the Athletic Union.

I am here to provide continuity for the Union and experience on where the Union has come from and where we want it to be. I assist the President in the delivery of BUCS fixtures and I am also responsible for all other day to day aspects of the Athletic Union; including finances, long term projects and special events. I am also here to help the Athletic Union develop and move forward to improve providing sport to the Students at Swansea University.

I was AU President myself here at Swansea in 2001/02 and left Swansea to work in London for BUSA (now BUCS) as a Sports Administrator. I moved employment to work as a Management Consultant before finally coming back home and taking the role in the Athletic Union.

The Strategic Plan is in place and we are looking at many ways in which we can develop sport here at Swansea. With Focus Sports and a coaching and support system in place, we are aiming to improve our performance standards in BUCS whilst also increasing participation and getting as many students regularly partaking in some form of sport as often as possible.

Your views are always important and I would be interested in any ideas or thoughts you might have. I can be found in the Athletic Union offices from 9.00am to 5.00pm weekdays.

My door is always open and I will do my best to help you with whatever problems you might encounter whilst being part of the Athletic Union.
