► Coaching Team

Swansea University is extremely fortunate to benefit from such a strong coaching team and support system. With assistance from the Sport Science Department, the Department of Sport and Recreation and outside bodies such as the Ospreys and the Celtic Crusaders the aim is to develop players physically, mentally and psychologically.

Head Coach - RICHARD LANCASTER

Richard is a level 3 coach and employee of the University's Athletic Union. Richard became involved with coaching the University in preparation for their Varsity match in 2007. He then became assistant in the 2007/08 season. Last season 'Lanky' took the reigns and successfully guided the side back into the highest level of competition for British University rugby, the Southern Premier League. As a player Richard represented the University as a winning BUSA finalist and also in the European final. He also represented Swansea, London Welsh, City of London and Mumbles in his playing career. Lanky gained representative honours with County, District and regional sides, Welsh Universities and the Crawshays. As a coach Richard has looked over local junior sides, Swansea and District U18s and Ospreys workshops. Richard has strong links with the Ospreys, Swansea in the Welsh Premiership, Corus in Division 1 and Mumbles in Division 2.

Assistant Coach - DR STEPHEN MELLALIEU

Steve is a Sports Psychologist working within Swansea University's Sport Science Department. Steve served as assistant coach to Stan Addicott in 2001 before a career move took him to Loughborough where he continued coaching. On his return to Swansea Steve became head coach and guided Swansea in their last spell in the top league. Dr Mellalieu currently consults with the Ospreys over Sport Psychology but in his hay day played for Dunvant and Wales Under 21s.

Assistant Coach - TONY THOMAS

Tony currently works for the Ospreys region as a coach development officer. Tony became involved in the team last season in Varsity preparations and provided a wealth of knowledge and experience to assist the coaching team. Tony is a great asset and the team look forward to him contributing to their full season programme

Assitant Coach - DANNY CUNNINGHAM

Danny is currently a member of staff with the Sport Science Department working as a researcher. Danny's area of expertise is conditioning and he currently works for Aberavon RFC in the Welsh Premiership as fitness and conditioning coach after an internship with the Ospreys. Danny again became involved in the team in preparation for last years Welsh Varsity and we look forward to him working as a full part of the coaching set up in the coming season.
