The Men's Rugby 1st XV has traditionally been the most successful team in Swansea University. With rugby being the Welsh national game the team have always enjoyed a healthy crop of players coming to the University, and great support of the team by the general student population.
The team has won most awards available to them, winning the British Championships on several occassions, the Welsh Universities Cup, The Welsh Varsity, The BUSA Premier League and been finalists in the Student Heineken European Cup.
There has also been a high calibre of player playing for the team such as Paul Thorburn, Rob Howley, Mark Bennett, Dafydd James and more recently; Dwayne Peel, Alun-Wyn Jones, Richie Pugh, Tal Selley and our most recent international, Jonathan Spratt.
Last season the team did well to get promoted from a difficult Premier tier B league with some very good results. Players such as Rhys Lawrence and Sam Soul performed consistently well in the team and have been rewarded with Regional and Premiership contracts respectively.
The team missed out narowly in the Welsh Varsity Match to their Cardiff foes in a tight 9 - 6 defeat.
This season the team is aiming to consolidate its position in the highest echelon of University Rugby and win back the Varsity Cup.
