► About Us

So who are we, what do we do and how can you get involved? This is what this page is all about - detailing what the club is about generally. If you're not a member but thinking about getting involved, this is probably the page you want to be looking at...

Who Are We?

Swansea University Sailing Club - a club anyone can join, doesn't matter whether you race for GBR or can't tell a boat from a caravan. All it costs you is the entry fee to the club and you need an AU card to cover you for insurance. If you decide / are chosen to race in events there may be additional costs to cover accommodation / transport / food etc, but these costs can sometimes be covered or at least subsidised by the AU and club funds or fundraising.

We sail every Wednesday afternoon at Mumbles Yacht Club and racing also takes place on certain Sunday's as part of the MYC Series. Check the website and your emails to keep you up-to-date in case there's a reason to cancel. Sometimes sailing can't happen because of not enough wind. if this is the case a decision will either be taken to cancel (Check the website!) or we might go down and do something else instead.

We will be happy to teach complete beginners how to sail in our clubs 6 laser 2's. We will also be involved in racing and training for BUCS events throughout the year. We also take part in team racing for the Annual Varsity event against Cardiff.

Socials are also a big part of the club, we work hard, train hard, and play even harder!

Membership:

Fees for this year are as follows:
£15 membership fee, which includes membership of Mumbles Yacht Club, where we sail from, as well as use of all our boats and kit.

An extra £2 contribution on Wednesdays goes towards fuel for the rib and maintainance.

There can also be extra payment required for entering events as these are expensive and cannot solely be subsidised by the club and AU.

You also MUST be a member of the AU to join the club. (£10 plus passport photos - this can be obtained from the AU office in Union House).

 What Do You Need?

Sailing Kit is expensive so you aren't expected to own it all. We provide the boats, but if you have your own in Swansea, you may be able to keep it down with the club's boats. The boats we use are mainly laser 2's - 2 person dinghies with trapezes and spinnakers.

Kit-wise, if you have your own bring it! We don't have unlimited supplies but we do have some. Wetsuits can be hired from the AU if you don't want to buy one, but we do insist that you wear one when it gets colder. We also have some buoyancy aids.

Basically kit-wise wear something you don't mind getting wet and BRING A CHANGE OF CLOTHES! A towel is quite useful too. Please consider footwear, if you don't have wetsuit boots, wear old trainers but make sure you don't mind getting them wet. If you have something to keep the wind off this is useful too. Don't worry too much about kit, but bear in mind that it does get very cold and you will be getting wet.

Any Questions, drop us an email (uwssailing@gmail.com).
